Wheelchair tennis is one of the fastest-growing wheelchair sports in the world
The sport grew in the 1980s as France became the first country in Europe to put together a specific wheelchair tennis programme. The sport made its first appearance at the Barcelona 1992 Paralympics.
Today, wheelchair tennis is one of the fastest growing wheelchair sports in the world and fits seamlessly with the able-bodied game.
Opponents hit a tennis ball with a racket back and forth over a .914 metre (3ft) net in the middle of the court. The goal is to hit the ball into the opponent’s half of the court without them being able to return it.
There are no modifications to the size of the court, rackets or tennis balls. The main differences are the specially designed wheelchairs and the ‘two-bounce rule,’ whereby the ball can bounce twice before being hit.
There are three categories athletes compete in: men’s, women’s and quads; each division has singles and doubles tournaments.
Athletes compete in a series of tournaments including Grand Slams: Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and US Open, plus the singles and doubles Masters.
Wheelchair tennis is governed by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
Wheelchair Tennis Paralympics 2024 Google Doodle: As the Paris Paralympics 2024 continues to captivate sports enthusiasts worldwide, Google commemorated the wheelchair tennis event on Tuesday through an engaging doodle featuring animated birds.
The doodle shows two birds playing the sport in a wheelchair in the pristine Parisian garden of Jardin du Palais Royal, or Jardin des Tuileries. “Ace attitudes and stellar serves. Wheelchair Tennis starts today at Stade Roland-Garros!” the search engine wrote on its official Google Doodles page.
The 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris kick-started wheelchair tennis events on August 30 and they will end on September 7 at the Roland Garros Stadium, famous for its clay courts. The tournament will feature singles and doubles matches in the men’s, women’s, and quads categories.
On Sunday, Alfie Hewett (Great Britain), Martin De La Puente (Spain), Todiko Oda (Japan), and Gustavo Fernandez (Argentina) qualified for the last 16 in matches with different profiles.
First conducted at the Barcelona Paralympic Games in 1992, wheelchair tennis is played at all four Grand Slam tournaments. The International Tennis Federation Wheelchair Tennis Tour now includes over 150 events, according to the official website.
The sport divides athletes into two categories:
The open class, for athletes with permanent impairment of one or both legs but with normal arm function.
The quad class, for athletes with additional restrictions in the playing arm, confining the ability to handle the racquet and manage the wheelchair.

Wheelchair tennis is a sport that requires dynamic movement, tactics and incredible racquet skills. At the Paris 2024 Paralympics, there will be 96 athletes from around the world competing in six medal events at the iconic Roland-Garros Stadium.

Brief history of wheelchair tennis
Wheelchair tennis was founded in 1976 following work by former US freestyle skier Brad Parks. Parks, who was injured in an accident, started hitting tennis balls from his wheelchair while in rehabilitation.
The sport grew in the 1980s and became an official medal event at Barcelona 1992. A total of 48 athletes competed in four medal events – the men’s singles, the men’s doubles, women’s singles and women’s doubles.(Wheelchair Tennis Paralympics 2024)
Parks won the men’s doubles with Randy Snow, who also captured the inaugural men’s singles title. The women’s events were won by Dutch athletes. Monique van den Bosch won the singles, and the doubles tournament with Chantal Vandierendonck.
Quad singles and doubles events were introduced at Athens 2004. Peter Norfolk of Great Britain earned the first singles title, while US pair of David Wagner and Nick Taylor took the doubles gold medal. (Wheelchair Tennis Paralympics 2024) .
The Netherlands top the wheelchair tennis medals table with 20 gold, 13 silver and 10 bronze medals. Dutch legend Esther Vergeer is the most decorated athlete in the sport, winning seven golds and one silver, while Japan’s Shingo Kunieda is the most successful male athlete with four golds and two bronze medals.
